This appears to be a simple and clear manual that is focussed on the needs of the less experienced entrepreneur.

The article on product development is a more theoretical document, but is well set out and covers the theory of Product Strategies, Market Research, Quality, and Product Strategies.

It also gives a checklist to guide planning.

This is a comprehensive publication covering the supporting business and organisational issues as well as focussing on idea generation and screening, product concepts and design specifications & product design and process development.

The body of the book is presented in a straight forward and clear manner and is supported by examples and ideas for further thought.

The book is published for free on the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology website.

My only difficulty is that you need to read this book online and can’t download or print it as a single document.

Product Development – Free Online Book

In a previous post I gave information about an online book on Unit Operations in Food Processing that had been published by the New Zealand Institute of Food Science . To me this was a very informative and useful book on the engineering aspects of food processing.

Now another book by the same authors, Mary and Richard Earle, on the formulation of new food products has been published on line.

This appears to be just as useful as the previous volume. The issues covered in the books seven chapters are:

    • The product development project in the company
    • The organisation of the product development project
    • Product strategy development: idea generation and screening
    • Product strategy development: product concepts and design specifications
    • Product design and process development
    • Product commercialisation
    • Product launch and evaluation

The book has many case studies, examples and exercises.
